Gertie In The Morning

Some people are just downright argumentative and when the day always starts out with “SO,.... don't you think it would be nice if we got along today?”, I knew there was going to be trouble.

Gertie always had something to say. She could talk your ear off if you let her. It could be about something important or totally irrelevant and it really didn't matter to her if it were true or not.

Gertie liked to antagonize. She could prick the skin of a nice day and turn it into a lemon....and it didn't take a lot of words to do it, either. I had decided that morning that I was not going to allow Gertie to rope me into a discussion that would in all likelihood end up an argument for no other reason than her irascible demeanor. It started out ok. She talked and I just nodded, semi-smiled, made my coffee, looked like I was listening and said “Oh”, when appropriate.

So far it was working but I should have known. How could Gertie's day continue if she didn't get a rise out of me first thing in the morning?  Gertie sat perplexed and slightly sad looking. I couldn't stand it, so I said “SO,.... don't you think it would be nice if we got along today?”

She brightened immediately.
